If you’re having trouble figuring out how to organize a small closet, trust me, I know exactly what you’re going through.
Having a tiny closet can be frustrating, like why do they even design apartments with such small closets? And it’s even more challenging when you have to share it!
How to Organize a Small Closet
A small closet can easily become a cluttered nightmare, making you feel frustrated and always searching for things. But with a little bit of creativity and using some of these clever small closet organization ideas, you can transform even the tiniest closet into a tidy and functional space.
1. Declutter First, Organize Later:
If you really want to learn how to organize a small closet, you first need to take some time to declutter.
This step will not only free up space but also make organizing much easier.
Start by taking everything out of your closet and sorting it into piles: keep, donate or sell, and toss. Be honest with yourself about what you actually wear and what items are just taking up space. Once you have decluttered, you can start organizing your remaining items.
2. Create zones within your closet:
Assign specific areas in your closet for different categories of clothing such as work clothes, casual wear, or special occasion outfits. This will make it easier to find what you need and keep your closet clutter-free.
Pro tip: if you want your closet to look more aesthetic, organize everything by color, too!
3. Place a metal drawer organizer inside the closet.
Let me tell you about your new favorite closet organizer – the 4 Drawer Metal Storage Organizer from Target. When I was living in San Francisco with a super tiny closet, this drawer was an absolute game-changer!
You can simply organize your clothes by category and neatly fold your PJs, underwear, bras, t-shirts, and yoga pants in this drawer organizer. For example, put underwear and bras in drawer 1, PJs in drawer 2, shirts in drawer 3, and yoga pants in drawer 4.

A little pricey but very worth it.
4. Use stackable storage bins:
These are great for maximizing vertical space in a small closet. You can use them to store folded clothes, shoes, or even accessories.
I like using plastic storage bins for clothes I’m thinking of donating and for my seasonal clothes.
5. Use drawer shelf storage containers
These organizers are awesome for saving space in your closet. You can store your shoes, t-shirts, and jeans.
I suggest putting in here those items that usually take up a lot of space in your closet when hanging, or clothes that end up looking messy – it’ll keep them neat and tidy!
6. Try Hanging Organizers:
To this day I still use hanging organizers to keep my closet organized.
They are not only practical, but they also save so much space. They can hold folded clothes, shoes, or even handbags, keeping everything neatly organized and easily accessible.
7. Utilize shelf dividers:
If your closet has shelves, use dividers to separate different categories of clothing such as shirts, pants, or sweaters. This will make it easier to find what you need without messing up the entire shelf.
There are like a million options out there for shelf dividers, but I personally find acrylic and wire ones to be the most common and useful.
8. Install hooks:
Hooks can be attached to the inside walls of the closet to hang items like handbags, hats, or even jewelry.
9. Invest in slim hangers:
Slim hangers save space compared to regular hangers and help you make the most out of your closet’s hanging capacity.
10. Utilize some baskets
I recently bought these women baskets from Amazon, and I’m seriously obsessed with them. Trust me, you’ll love them too!
Create designated spots within your closet for specific types of items using woven baskets, such as one basket for workout clothes, another for pajamas, and so on. This will help you maintain a clutter-free and organized space.
You can also utilize different sizes of woven baskets to create a customized storage system for your closet. Use smaller baskets for organizing small accessories and larger baskets for bulkier items like sweaters or jeans.
Woven baskets can also be used as dividers on shelves to keep items separated and neatly organized.
Extra Tip. Use hanging shoe organizers or Shoe Racks
Organize your shoes with a hanging organizer or shoe racks – it’ll save you tons of space in your closet!
