This post is all about nightstand organization ideas

Yesterday, when I decluttered my closet and drawer, I mentioned that I’m very committed this year to organizing every single corner of my house. I’m also planning to move out this summer, so I want to declutter and downsize before then.

If you’re feeling the same way and want to organize your space to stop it from stressing you out, I totally feel you. Here are some functional nightstand organization ideas and tips to help you declutter.

Decluttering Tips and Nightstand Organization Ideas

Step 1: Clear Everything Off

Start by taking everything off your nightstand. Yes, everything. It’s easier to figure out what should stay when you’re not trying to sort through the chaos in a tiny space. Lay it all out on your bed or a nearby surface so you can see what you’re working with.

I feel like I cheated a little because in December I went all out and decluttered most of my house, so there wasn’t much left. But I still did it!

Trying to get rid of the clutter? Me too! Here are some simple decluttering tips and nightstand organization ideas

Step 2: Clean and Vacuum the Nightstand

Once everything is cleared off, it’s time to clean. If your nightstand has drawers, give them a good vacuum with a handheld vacuum. If you don’t have one, a humid cloth works just as well. Wipe down the surface and inside the drawers to remove any dust or crumbs.

Step 2: Choose Your Essentials

Ask yourself: what do I really need next to my bed? For most of us, this includes things like:

  • A lamp or soft lighting
  • Your phone charger (bonus points for a tidy, discreet cord solution)
  • A glass or bottle of water
  • A book or e-reader if you’re a bedtime reader
  • Lip balm or hand cream
  • Your planner

That’s it! Everything else is probably just clutter. Be honest with yourself about what you truly use and need.

Here are the items I kept and plan to organize more once the organizers from Amazon arrive:
My iluminating nail concealer from Londontown Kur (LOVE IT), nail file, and buffers (I do my nails every week by my bed).
A couple of Scunci hair headbands I like to easily grab and use when I’m in bed.
My planner and pens (I can’t live without them).
Headphones, phone charger, reading lamp, and coaster.

Step 3: Let Go of the Extras

Now comes the fun (and sometimes tough) part: decluttering. Do you have half a dozen random pens? Toss them into your desk drawer. Old receipts? Time to trash or file them.

If you’re unsure about an item, ask yourself, “Does this belong here? Does it make my life easier or more peaceful at bedtime?” If the answer is no, put it somewhere else.

Step 4: Create a System

Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time to organize! Here are a few ideas to keep things neat and functional, but I’ll share more ideas later in the post, just keep reading lol!

  1. Use a Tray or Small Basket: A tray can corral loose items like lip balm, hand cream, or your glasses. It keeps things looking tidy and prevents them from spreading out all over the surface.
  2. Use Drawer Organizers: Use small bins or dividers to keep everything in its place. Dedicate sections for items like chargers, bedtime essentials, or a notepad and pen.
  3. Invest in Stylish Storage: If your nightstand doesn’t have a drawer, consider a cute storage box or basket to hide away less-than-pretty essentials like tissues or extra cords.
  4. Limit the Decor: Keep decorative items to a minimum so your nightstand doesn’t feel cluttered. A small plant, a framed photo, or a candle will look good without overwhelming the space.

Step 5: Find Your Style

It took me several attempts to find a style I liked for organizing and styling my nightstand. I didn’t want to invest in organizers before decluttering, but now that I know what I want to keep, I’m investing in these Amazon organizers that match my current style.

Let me know which one you like best.

I ended up keeping the book, flowers, and hatch alarm on my nightstand.

I also always keep a small space heater by my bed. It’s not the most stylish, and I don’t like having it on top all the time, but I do use it when I’m freezing in bed.

Step 6: Make It a Routine

Even the most organized nightstand can turn messy if you don’t maintain it. Take five minutes once a week to tidy up, toss trash, put things back where they belong, (Yes, I’m talking about those mugs you keep by your nightstand, haha!) and make sure it’s still what you want.

Tips for a Relaxing and Cozy Nightstand Vibe

  • Add a calming scent: Keep a small essential oil roller or pillow spray nearby to help you unwind at bedtime.
  • Incorporate a tech-free zone: If you’re trying to cut back on screen time, keep your phone far away across the room and use a classic alarm clock instead.

I invested in the Hatch alarm in December, and it took forever to deliver, so they sent me the new Hatch Alarm 3 instead. I’m so glad they did because this one is even better for helping me stay away from my phone. Plus, I love the meditations they have in the app!

  • Embrace minimalism: The fewer items you have, the easier it is to keep things looking and feeling serene.

7. Use Drawer Organizers:

If your nightstand has drawers, add small organizers or dividers to sort items like pens, receipts, or chargers. This keeps everything accessible but neatly tucked away.

8. Use a Decorative Box or Basket:

Store items like extra charging cords, medication, or books in a decorative box or woven basket. It hides clutter while still keeping things within reach.

9. Add a Small Dish for Loose Items:

Keep a small bowl or dish on your nightstand for loose change, keys, or rings. It’s a simple way to prevent small items from accumulating on your nightstand.

10. Limit What’s on Top:

Keep only what you use daily on top of your nightstand, like a lamp, a book, or a plant. This reduces clutter and keeps the space functional.

11. Add a Small Plant:

A small potted plant can add life to your nightstand without taking up much space. Choose plants like succulents or air plants that require little maintenance. (Or fake tulips, like I did)

12. Use a Magazine Rack or Book Holder:

If you enjoy reading before bed, keep a magazine rack or a small book holder on the side of your nightstand for easy access to your books.

13. Hide Those cables:

Tame your charging cables and cords with a cable organizer or clips. This keeps everything organize and prevents cords from tangling.

These cable clips are such a genius idea; I can’t believe I never thought of them until now.
