Homemade Whipped Tallow Sunscreen

I love making this whipped tallow sunscreen. It hydrates, protects, and melts into my skin like a moisturizer using clean, simple ingredients.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably gone down the rabbit hole of trying to swap out conventional skincare for something cleaner, simpler, and actually nourishing. That’s exactly how I ended up making my own whipped tallow sunscreen and honestly, I’m never going back.

I already made a cream tallow sunscreen, and it was one of the most popular recipes on my blog this past year. This time I decided to do a whipped version, which makes it lighter, fluffier, and so much easier to spread more like a moisturizer than a traditional sunscreen.

I already loved using tallow for my skin (it’s insanely moisturizing and feels so natural), but turning it into a sunscreen? Game changer.

Whipped Tallow Sunscreen Recipe

Makes about 8–10 oz

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup tallow
  • ¼ cup jojoba oil
  • ¼ cup red raspberry seed oil
  • 2 teaspoons carrot seed oil
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax
  • 2 tablespoons shea butter
  • 4 tablespoons non-nano zinc oxide
  • 20 drops essential oil (optional)

Instructions:

1. Melt the Base

In a double boiler, combine the tallow, beeswax, and shea butter. Gently heat until everything is fully melted and smooth.

2. Add the Liquid Oils

Remove from heat and stir in:

  • jojoba oil
  • red raspberry seed oil
  • carrot seed oil

If you’re using essential oils, add them now and mix well.

Want to save this for later?

Send it to yourself now and try it out when you’re ready!

3. Mix in the Zinc Oxide

Slowly add the non-nano zinc oxide, stirring continuously until everything is fully incorporated and smooth.

Wear a mask during this step so you don’t inhale the powder.

4. Let It Cool Slightly

Let the mixture sit until it starts to thicken just a little. You don’t want it fully solid just soft enough to whip.

5. Whip It

Using a hand mixer, whip the mixture until it becomes light, fluffy, and creamy.

6. Store

Transfer to a clean jar and store in a cool, dry place.

Notes & Tips

  • This creates a soft, whipped sunscreen that spreads easily on the skin
  • Reapply regularly, especially after sweating or swimming
  • For sensitive skin, stick to gentle essential oils like lavender or skip them entirely
