This post is all about from-scratch kitchen organization ideas.

If you cook from scratch like I do most of the time (or if you want to start now), you know that a well-organized kitchen isn’t just about aesthetics, it’s about function. Between bulk ingredients, homemade staples, and DIY food storage, keeping everything accessible and tidy is essential to an efficient and enjoyable cooking space.

In this post, I’ll do my best to walk you through practical and aesthetic solutions and ideas to organize your from-scratch kitchen so that it’s as beautiful as it is functional.

From-Scratch Kitchen Organization Ideas:

1. Declutter and Prioritize Essentials

Before diving into the actual organization, start by decluttering.

Get rid of expired ingredients, unused gadgets, and anything that doesn’t serve your cooking style. Ask yourself:

  • Do I use this regularly?
  • Does this ingredient or tool align with my from-scratch cooking habits?
  • Can I store this in a more space-efficient way?

Prioritize the essentials: whole grains, flours, natural sweeteners, home-canned goods, fermentation tools, and whatever else you use often.

Although it’s important to declutter, it’s also important not to go overboard. I once got rid of most of my spices, only to realize later that I needed some of them for my recipes and had to repurchase some of them. Not very happy about that, lol.

2. Store Bulk Ingredients Efficiently

Bulk ingredients are the backbone of a from-scratch kitchen, but they can get messy without a system. Here are some tips to store them efficiently:

  • Glass Jars & Containers: If you have a big kitchen glass jars and containers are a game-changer. Store flours, grains, and dried goods in clear glass jars to keep them fresh and visible. Bonus points if you use matching jars for an aesthetic touch!

  • Labeled Bins for Overflow Storage: If you buy in bulk, use large airtight bins to store excess supplies in your pantry or a dedicated storage area.

Having a label maker will totally change your life, I promise. It doesn’t need to be fancy, there are plenty of mini label printers on Amazon for under $15, and they’ll transform your kitchen organization for good.

  • Mason Jars for DIY Staples: Store your homemade nut butters, jams, and ferments in mason jars and keep them neatly organized by category. If you’re on a budget, you can find all kinds of mason jars at dollar stores for way cheaper than at Target or Amazon.

3. Organize Your Pantry for Function

I’ve already written a post packed with pantry organization ideas to help maximize space, so I highly recommend you read that one after this.

A well-organized pantry makes scratch cooking so much easier. Try these tips:

  • Use Deep Drawers or Pull-Out Baskets: These help keep bags of flour, dried beans, and grains easy to access without creating a mess.

  • Arrange by Use & Category: Group similar ingredients together, like baking essentials, dry goods, spices, canned goods, and homemade ferments.
  • Label Everything: Chalkboard labels or simple tags add charm while keeping things organized.

4. Keep Cooking Tools & Utensils Accessible

When you cook from scratch, you likely use certain tools daily, like wooden spoons, cast iron pans, and fermentation crocks. Here’s how to keep them within reach:

  • Aesthetic Utensil holder: I saw a tip on TikTok, and it’s a great idea! Use a plant pot big enough to store your utensils aesthetically on your counter. You can also organize them in a drawer if you prefer.

  • Magnetic Knife Strips: Free up counter space by storing knives on a magnetic strip instead of in a drawer.
  • Open Shelving for Everyday Items : Store frequently used plates, bowls, and glass jars on open shelves for easy access and a cozy aesthetic.

5. Create a Dedicated Space for Fermentation & Homemade Goods

Fermenting, canning, and making homemade staples require space. Set up a dedicated spot in your kitchen or pantry for:

  • Fermentation Jars & Crocks: A cool, dark shelf is ideal for keeping ferments happy.
  • Canning & Preserving Supplies: Store canning lids, rings, and jars in labeled bins.

  • DIY Staples: Whether it’s homemade jam, kombucha, or sourdough starter, keep a designated fridge section for fresh homemade goods.

6. Maintain a Minimalist & Clutter-Free Look

A from-scratch kitchen doesn’t have to feel cluttered. Keep things organized by:

  • Using uniform containers to create visual harmony.
  • Hiding rarely used appliances to keep counters clear.
  • Opting for natural materials (wood, glass, linen) for a warm and timeless aesthetic.

Honestly, when I started doing all my DIY projects and cooking from scratch, and began buying ingredients, I quickly realized I needed to find an organization system for everything. I now have a few separate drawers for my DIY and cooking-from-scratch projects, a label maker, and several baskets and containers to keep things tidy.
