Why Make Your Own Dishwasher Detergent?
Store-bought dishwasher detergents often contain chemicals that can be harmful to your health and the environment. By making your own, you have complete control over the ingredients, ensuring that your detergent is safe, non-toxic, and effective. Plus, it’s budget-friendly!
This dishwasher detergent recipe makes around 16 ounces.
Ingredients
- 1 cup washing soda
- 1 cup
boraxbaking soda ( I’ve been doing my good research and realized that borax isn’t really a non-toxic option, so I’m now using baking soda instead, and it works just as well. - ½ cup citric acid
- ½ cup sea salt
- 5-15 drops essential oils (Optional but citrus is great!)
Instructions
1. Mix the Dry Ingredients:
In a large bowl, combine the washing soda, baking soda, sea salt, and citric acid. Stir until everything is well mixed.
2. Add Essential Oils:
Slowly add in 5-15 drops of your chosen essential oil. (Essential oils are highly concentrated, so a few drops are usually sufficient.) Citrus oils like lemon or orange are ideal for this recipe, as they provide a fresh, clean scent. Stir thoroughly to ensure the oils are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
*Some essential oils, when heated to high temperatures in the dishwasher, might lose their scent or degrade. Make sure the oils you choose are safe for high heat.
*Avoid oils that may leave a strong scent or residue that could affect your dishes, such as heavier oils like patchouli or sandalwood.
How to Use
Simply add 1-2 tablespoons of your homemade detergent to the dishwasher’s detergent compartment.
Run your dishwasher as usual, and enjoy sparkling clean, non-toxic dishes!
How to Store Your Homemade Dishwasher Powder
I store my homemade dishwasher detergent in a glass jars I purchased from the Dollar Tree. They’re cheap, and perfect for keeping everything organized.
I also use labels from Amazon to clearly mark my jars so I know exactly what’s inside.
When storing your dishwasher detergent, make sure to keep it in a safe place, out of reach of children. Even though all the ingredients are natural, they can still be harmful if ingested, so it’s important to label your jar and store it properly.
Tips for Best Results
- Adjust for Hard Water: If you have hard water, you might need to add a little extra citric acid to help soften the water and prevent buildup on your dishes.
- Essential Oils: If you prefer a different scent, feel free to experiment with other essential oils, However, citrus oils tend to work best for cutting grease and leaving a fresh scent.
- Storage: Store your detergent in a cool, dry place to keep it fresh and effective.
