I know it’s flea and tick season (ugh), and if you’ve been dealing with fleas too, I feel you. I already complained and shared my natural flea and tick spray recipe in my last post, but sometimes you need something that sticks around a little longer, especially in those cozy corners, carpets, and beds where pests love to hide. That’s where this flea and tick powder comes in.

This is a good flea and tick powder for the house. I sprinkle it around my dogs’ beds, by the couch, carpet, and anywhere they like to nap. It smells fresh, it’s super easy to make, and It doesn’t involve any harsh chemicals. Just a few pantry staples and some essential oils that flea and ticks hate.

This recipe is NOT SAFE FOR CATS because of the essential oils, so if you have cats at home, skip this one and check with your vet for a safer alternative.

Flea and Tick Powder Recipe:

Ingredients

You can find high-quality essential oils from trusted brands like doTERRA, Rocky Mountain Oils, Edens Garden, and Simply Earth. Look for organic or therapeutic-grade oils.

1. Mix your base powder

In a small bowl, mix together the diatomaceous earth and baking soda. These two are the main ingredients that do the heavy lifting, diatomaceous earth helps dry out fleas and other bugs, while baking soda helps absorb odors.

Diatomaceous earth is super fine, so try not to breathe it in while you’re mixing

Send it to yourself now and try it out when you’re ready!

2. Add your essential oils

Drop in the rosemary, cedarwood, and peppermint essential oils. These are my favorite oils to use for flea remedies, they’re all naturally bug-repelling and give the powder a nice, clean scent. Stir well so everything is evenly combined.

3. Sprinkle wherever needed

You can sprinkle this powder around your dog’s bed, under furniture, along baseboards, or anywhere flea and ticks might be hiding out. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight, then vacuum it up.

You can do this weekly during flea and tick season or as needed!

This DIY flea and tick powder has definitely made a difference in my home, especially when I use it alongside the homemade spray. It’s quick to make, smells way better than store-bought stuff, and gives me peace of mind knowing I’m not coating my house in chemicals.

Notes:

  • Always use food-grade diatomaceous earth not the stuff for pools.
  • Store any leftover powder in a sealed jar for next time.
