If you’re looking for a natural alternative to store-bought healing salve like Neosporin®, this homemade Neosporin® cream is a simple and effective option to make.

I made this homemade Neosporin® copy cat recipe with skin-soothing herbs like calendula, comfrey, and plantain, each known for their calming, antibacterial, and healing properties.

If you want to learn more about herbal recipes, the Herbal Academy has some really helpful short courses. I’ve enjoyed using them to learn more for my blog, for my family, and just for fun.

This homemade Neosporin® is perfect for minor cuts, scrapes, bug bites, and dry patches, and a great addition to any natural first aid kit. It’s an easy DIY that feels good to use, gift, and even better to make.

I also just found out that boo boo cream is a cute nick name for this gentle, healing salve or ointment.

Think of it as a natural, homemade version of Neosporin® but without the petroleum, and with herbs instead. It’s safe for kids, great for sensitive skin, and kind of a go-to for DIYers like us who love natural recipes.

This homemade recipe is inspired by products like Neosporin® but made with natural ingredients. It’s not affiliated with or endorsed by the makers of Neosporin.

Homemade Neosporin® Recipe (Boo Boo Cream)

Makes around 4-5 ounces.

P.S. I also made a Natural Chickweed Salve in case you’re looking for another soothing herbal option.

Ingredients

Instructions:

1. Infuse Your Oil

In a clean jar, mix equal parts of dried plantain leaf, comfrey, and calendula. Then pour your carrier oil over the herbs until they’re completely covered. Seal the jar and let it sit in a cool, dark place for about 6 weeks. You can give it a gentle shake every few days.

After 6 weeks, strain the oil using cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer.

Send it to yourself now and try it out when you’re ready!

If you’re short on time, you can gently heat the herbs and oil on the stove for a few hours on super low heat using a double boiler.

2. Melt It Down

In a double boiler (or a glass bowl over a pot of simmering water), combine 1/2 cup of your infused oil (prior step) and 4 tablespoons beeswax. Stir occasionally until fully melted and combined.

3. Add Essential Oils (Optional)

Let the melted mixture cool a bit before adding 10–15 drops of essential oil. This is optional.

Step 4: Pour and Cool

Carefully pour your mixture into containers, I used a little jar and some pink tins I found on Amazon. Let them cool uncovered until solid. They’ll harden pretty quickly!

Notes:

  • Any essential oil works but you don’t have to use them either.

How to Use It:

Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin as needed. Use on minor cuts, scrapes, bug bites, or dry patches.

Shelf Life:

Store in a cool, dry place. This balm should last about 6–12 months, depending on the freshness of your infused oil.
