I’m sadly not very good at taking care of my plants, even though I love them. I always forget to water them (please don’t judge me), and I never use fertilizers or anything like that. Still, I had this plant that was dying and in pretty bad shape, stuck in the ugly plastic pot it came in. It just needed some love, so I started looking for how to make a homemade fertilizer and came up with this comfrey tea fertilizer.

Initially, I wasn’t even thinking of posting this homemade fertilizer because it’s not really my niche here. But I’ll show you my little plant now, and you’ll understand why I’m doing it. Sometimes plants just need a little love, nothing expensive just some homemade fertilizer, water, a cute pot, and they’ll look beautiful and healthy again.

I didn’t take a before photo because I never planned to write a post about it, but here’s my plant today.
Homemade Fertilizer Recipe
Just a heads-up: it smells bad, but your plants will LOVE it.
Ingredients
- Comfrey (fresh or dried)
- Water
- Jar
- Spray bottle (optional)

Instructions:
1. Pack Your Jar with Comfrey
Grab your comfrey and loosely pack your glass jar about 3/4 of the way full.
If you’re using dried comfrey (like I did), it might not fill up the jar the same way fresh leaves would, but that’s totally okay.
2. Fill with Water
Top off the jar with water, covering all the comfrey. You want everything submerged so it starts to break down and release all those nutrients.
Want to save this for later?

3. Secure the Lid and Wait
Put the lid on tightly and let it sit and steep for at least 6 weeks.
If you don’t want to wait 6+ weeks for your comfrey tea to brew, you can also make a quick heat infusion! Heat the pot over low heat and bring it to a gentle simmer. You don’t want a rolling boil just a soft simmer that warms the water and helps release all those good nutrients.
Let it simmer for a couple hours. After simmering, remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for several hours or overnight.

4. Strain Out the Leaves
Strain out the leaves and save the liquid. You’ll be left with a very strong, dark liquid fertilizer.

5. Dilute Before Using
Before you pour it into your plants, make sure to dilute it 1:1 with water (half comfrey tea, half water).
Then simply add it to the soil around your plants for a nutrient boost!

Notes:
- Fresh comfrey leaves do work best, but I used dried and it worked great too.
- This smells pretty bad, so keep it outside!
