If I had known I could make natural DIY mascara that actually works, I would’ve started using this homemade mascara recipe a longgg time ago. I love this blog because it’s allowed me to learn so much through my own content. I get to train myself in formulation, herbalism, skincare, and photography and it’s just so satisfying to make things for yourself that you know are truly non-toxic, natural, and effective.
This natural DIY mascara makes the perfect thoughtful gift for your friends and a beautiful first step in your journey transitioning to clean beauty. It’s gentle on your lashes, free from harsh chemicals, and very easy to make, making it an ideal swap if you’re looking to simplify your routine with safer, homemade alternatives

For best results, I highly recommend applying my DIY lash growth serum first (I shared the full recipe in this post!) before applying the mascara. It helps nourish and strengthen your lashes over time, giving you a fuller, healthier base for your natural makeup routine.
Natural DIY Mascara Recipe
This DIY mascara is a total game-changer. It’s made with clean, simple ingredients and it’s honestly kind of fun to make.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 tsp activated charcoal
- 1/2 tsp bentonite clay
- 1/2 tsp vegetable glycerin
- 1/2 tsp aloe vera gel
- An empty mascara tube (you can buy these on Amazon or reuse an old one, just make sure it’s clean!)

Instructions:
1. Mix the Powders
In a small bowl, mix together the bentonite clay and charcoal until they’re fully combined.

2. Blend the Liquids
In another small bowl, stir together the vegetable glycerin and aloe vera gel.
Want to save this for later?

3. Combine Everything
Now pour the aloe mixture into the charcoal mix and stir it all up. You want a creamy, smooth texture. If it’s too thick or clumpy, just add a tiny bit more glycerin or aloe gel until it feels right.

4. Fill Your Tube
Use a pipette or tiny funnel to carefully transfer the mascara into your empty mascara tube. It’s a little messy, but totally worth it.

Notes:
- You can add a drop of essential oil if you want.
- To make this mascara waterproof, try adding some beeswax!
Honestly, I didn’t think I could love a DIY mascara this much. If you try it, let me know how it turns out! And if you’re into more DIY beauty recipes, I have plenty more.
