I recently dyed my hair red, so I’m doing my best to use only natural, nourishing products that won’t strip or damage it. This 3-ingredient flax seed hair gel is my go-to for keeping frizz under control while keeping my hair soft and healthy. It’s quick to make, affordable, and you can add your favorite essential oils for an extra boost.

I started making my own flax seed hair gel when I realized how easy and affordable it is to skip store-bought products and just DIY all your hair products. This recipe takes less than 10 minutes, uses only a few simple ingredients, and leaves your hair soft without that crunchy, stiff feeling that some gels give.
If you’ve been looking for a natural way to manage frizz and add a bit of hold, this is worth trying.
Why Flax Seed?
Flax seeds release a natural gel when boiled, which coats the hair and helps lock in moisture. They’re rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can nourish your scalp and keep your hair feeling healthier over time. Plus, this recipe costs almost nothing to make and you know exactly what’s going on your hair.
Flax Seed Hair Gel Recipe

- 3 tablespoons whole flax seeds
- 1 1/2cups water
- 10 drops essential oils (optional)

Instructions
1. Boil the Flax Seeds
Add the water and flax seeds to a small pot and turn the heat to medium. Stir frequently to prevent the seeds from sticking.

2. Let It Thicken
Once the water starts boiling, continue to cook for about 5 minutes or until the water takes on a slightly gel-like consistency.

3. Strain the Seeds
Remove from heat and strain the mixture while it’s still hot. A fine mesh strainer or even a clean thin cloth will work.

4. Add Essential Oils (Optional)
Stir in a few drops of essential oil if you’d like. Rosemary and lavender are great choices for hair.

How to Use Homemade Hair Gel
Apply a small amount to damp hair to smooth frizz or scrunch it into curls for light hold.

Notes
- Essential oils are optional, but rosemary and lavender are excellent for scalp and hair health.
- Store your gel in the fridge for up to 10 days. If you notice a change in color or smell, it’s time to make a fresh batch. Adding a preservative can help it last longer.
