For some reason, it’s taken me a while to post this recipe on the blog, even though I’ve had it ready for a while. I love making and having tallow lip balm at home (and with me wherever I go go) is just amazing. This tallow lip balm recipe is better than any store-bought lip balm, super moisturizing, and I promise, you won’t smell like beef or anything like that.
There’s something so satisfying about making your own lip balm, especially when you know exactly what’s going in it. This tallow lip balm has become a favorite in my natural skincare stash. It’s super moisturizing, smooth, and easy to make in a single batch that’ll last you a long time (or make great little gifts!). Can we start a trend of giving natural, homemade gifts?

Where to Get Quality Tallow?
The easiest option? Amazon, quick, convenient, and gets the job done. But if you’re like me and go through tallow super fast, Etsy is a great place to buy in bulk from small shops like Lady May Tallow (that’s where I personally get mine!). And if you’re feeling extra DIY-ish, you can render it yourself at home.
Tallow Lip Balm Recipe
Here’s my step-by-step tallow lip balm recipe! You can find all the ingredients on Amazon.
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoon Castor oil
- 2 tablespoon jojoba oil
- 1 teaspoon cocoa butter
- 3 tablespoon beeswax
- 2 tablespoon tallow
- 10 drops essential oil (optional)
- Lip balm container
Since this recipe is made entirely with oils and butters, it has a longer shelf life and doesn’t require any preservatives.

Instructions:
1. Melt the Base Ingredients
In a glass container (I like to use a small pyrex measuring cup), combine everything except the essential oils, that includes your castor oil, jojoba oil, cocoa butter, beeswax, and tallow.
Want to save this for later?
Place the container over a double boiler on medium-low heat and let everything melt slowly. Stir occasionally until it’s fully liquid and smooth.

Once everything is melted, carefully remove the container from heat. Let it cool for a few minutes, not too long, just enough so it’s not super hot.
2. Add Essential Oils (optional)
Now that it’s slightly cooled, stir in your essential oils if using. About 10 drops total is perfect, but feel free to adjust based on your preference. Peppermint, lavender, or sweet orange are all great choices!

3: Pour into Containers
Pour your mixture into lip balm tubes or small tins. Work quickly, as the balm will start to solidify as it cools. Let them sit for a few hours until fully hardened, then cap them and store in a cool, dry place.

Notes:
- Essential oils are optional. I like more neutral balms, so I usually don’t use them.
- Swap cocoa butter for shea butter if you want a softer finish.
- You can use any carrier oil you like here. I love the combo of castor (for gloss) and jojoba (for nourishment). You can also use herb infused oils.
