This post is all about garage organization ideas

Organizing my garage has been a goal of mine since last year, especially with my upcoming move this summer. I want to take this opportunity to sort through everything, figure out exactly what I have, and finally clear out all the clutter that’s been piling up.

Sometimes I wonder if life would be simpler without a garage, it would definitely force us to keep fewer things. I feel like garages often turn into dumping grounds, and I’ve been guilty of that myself. Just the other day, I saw my next-door neighbor moving out, and it took three dumpsters to clear out everything he had accumulated in his garage over the years.

If your garage feels overwhelming or stressful, you’re not alone. I’ve been there, too, and I want to help. In this post, I’ll share some practical tips for decluttering your garage and inspire you with simple, easy-to-recreate organization ideas. Let’s transform that stressful space into one that’s organized, functional, aesthetic, and clutter-free!

Garage Decluttering Tips

I absolutely love how inexpensive and cute Target storage boxes are! I found these beautiful lavender containers that instantly caught my eye. The only downside? They’re plastic. While I try to avoid plastic whenever possible, my garage is one area I’ve had to make an exception, at least for now, because it’s just so practical for garage storage.

I think Target has really stepped up its game when it comes to garage organization! I keep seeing new things being added, like new shelves and stylish bins. It’s so exciting because they’re making it easier to organize while also keeping things looking great. Amazon’s also been so useful lately, offering beautiful labels. It’s definitely a great time to organize your garage.

Setting Limits to Declutter

When it comes to decluttering, I’m all about setting limits. If you’ve followed my blog, you know that I used this method when I organized my closet. I decided to keep a total of 100 clothing items because that’s how many hangers I owned. For the garage, I applied the same idea. After some back and forth, I settled on five storage boxes. Honestly, this was a stretch for me, but I knew it would force me to make tough decisions about what to keep, donate, or organize elsewhere in the house.

Here are a few extra tips that worked for me:

  • Start Small: Don’t try to tackle the whole garage in one day. Break it into zones or categories and work on one area at a time.
  • Be Honest: Ask yourself, “Do I really need this?” If it’s something you haven’t used in over a year, it’s probably time to let it go.
  • Donate or Recycle: Find local donation centers or recycling options to give your unwanted items a second life.

Garage Organization Ideas

1. Use QR Codes

For a tech-savvy twist, consider adding QR codes to your storage boxes. These codes are available in various colors, as well as classic black and white, on Amazon. With the help of a free app, you can easily scan and organize your items, making it simple to find what you need.

2. Use Stand Shelves

Maximize your garage space by incorporating stand shelves. These shelves are perfect for keeping your items neatly organized and off the floor. Opt for adjustable or heavy-duty shelves to store everything from tools to seasonal decorations.

3. Add Plastic Containers with Labels

I’m obsessed with using labels to keep my garage organized! I purchased these removable adhesive pocket labels from Amazon, and they’re seriously amazing. I printed some labels, slid them into the inserts, and stuck them on my plastic containers. It’s so easy to see what’s inside, and the best part? If I need to switch things up, I can just swap out the label. Total game-changer!

5. Garage Cabinets

Garage cabinets are a great way to keep your space neat and clutter-free. They provide a sleek, hidden storage solution for tools, cleaning supplies, and other items you don’t want out in the open. You can go for wall-mounted cabinets to save floor space or choose free-standing ones for a more flexible setup. Adding adjustable shelves makes it even easier to store items of various sizes. Plus, you can get ones with locks if you need to keep certain things secure.

6. Wired Shelves

Wired shelves are a game-changer for garage organization. They’re super sturdy, easy to set up. I love that they’re adjustable, so you can tweak them to fit whatever you need to store. Whether it’s tools, bins, or seasonal stuff, wired shelves keep everything visible and easy to grab. Plus, they don’t take up much space visually, making them a great option if you’re working with a smaller garage.
