I’ve been trying to mix my old classic DIYs with newer, fresher recipes. This was one of the very first “natural swaps” I ever made when I started developing sensitivity to fragrances and wanted healthier alternatives for common household products.
I grew up with bleach in my house, and to this day I cannot tolerate the smell or the fumes. So finding a safe, simple, non-toxic option felt like a lifesaver… and honestly, it works just as well.
This little DIY is going to be your new laundry bestie. It takes just a couple of minutes to make, and you probably already have everything you need at home.
I’ve been using it nonstop, and honestly… I don’t miss store-bought bleach at all.

Homemade Bleach Recipe:
Ingredients:
- Essential oil (optional – lavender, lemon, or orange work beautifully)
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
- Distilled water (or tap, depending on your area)

Instructions:
1. Measure Your Bottle
First, check how much liquid your bottle holds. Mine fits 3 cups, so this recipe uses a simple 50/50 ratio.
If your bottle holds 4 cups total, use 2 cups hydrogen peroxide + 2 cups water.
Want to save this for later?
2. Mix the Hydrogen Peroxide
Pour 1.5 cups of hydrogen peroxide into a measuring cup.

3. Add Essential Oils (Optional but amazing)
To make the mix smell fresher (and soften that peroxide scent), add about 20 drops of your favorite essential oil.
Lavender, lemon, or sweet orange smell incredible in laundry.
Pour this mixture into your bottle.

4. Add Your Water
Now add 1.5 cups of distilled water.
My tap water is pretty good, so I used that instead. If yours is hard water, distilled is best or you can boil water for 30 minutes, let it cool, and use that.
Pour the water into the bottle and give it a gentle swirl to combine everything.
