When it comes to hair care, I’m always looking for natural homemade shampoo recipes that are easy to make, non-toxic, and that actually work.

Today, I’m excited (and a little hesitant) to share my homemade shampoo recipe with you.I’ll admit, I was hesitant to share this recipe because hair care is so personal in my opinion. What works wonders for one person might not work for another. Your hair type, water quality, and even the climate you live in can influence your results.

I also need to warn you that if you’re switching from conventional shampoos to a natural one like this, you should be prepared for a “detox phase.” During this time, your hair might feel greasy or sticky as it adjusts. It’s not the most fun part of the journey, but trust me, it’s worth it in the end.

In this recipe, the Castile soap acts as the cleansing agent, while the avocado oil and vitamin E provide much-needed moisture. Maintaining your hair’s pH balance is key to healthy locks, so I recommend following up with an acidic rinse, like diluted apple cider vinegar, to restore balance.

My Experience:

I always test my recipes before sharing them, and this one is no exception. Here’s a photo and a video of my hair right after using this shampoo—shiny, soft, and clean! I’ll admit that going through the detox phase wasn’t easy, but the results made it all worthwhile. This shampoo foams up beautifully, as you can see in the photo of my hand lathered with bubbles. I love it!

I do recommend pairing this shampoo with a good conditioner to keep your hair hydrated and manageable.

This is what my hair looks like after using this recipe—so healthy and shiny!

How to Make Natural Homemade Shampoo

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. Pour 1/4 cup of coconut milk into a glass jar or bottle.

2. Add 1/4 cup of castile soap to the jar.

3. Mix in 1 tsp of the oil. If you have oily hair, avoid using the oils, reduce the quantity, or use only one.

5. Drop in 10 drops of your preferred essential oil (peppermint or rosemary).

6. Stir or shake the jar well to combine all the ingredients.

7. Shake well before each use.

Notes

Store the mixture in the fridge to prevent bacterial growth and use it within a month. Alternatively, you can freeze portions to make shampoo bars for longer storage.

If you try this recipe, follow the detox process for a few days, and if it doesn’t work for you, that’s okay. You can tweak the recipe by reducing the oil, adding apple cider vinegar, or even removing some ingredients completely. I’ll be making a shampoo for oily, greasy hair soon and will try and share that as well.

If you try this shampoo, let me know how it works for you.
