Cleaning the toilet isn’t exactly my favorite chore. But having a natural, effective, and nice smelling homemade toilet cleaner on hand makes the job a little less dreadful. This homemade Toilet Cleaner Gel is super simple to make, uses safe ingredients you probably already have, and leaves your bathroom feeling fresh without harsh chemicals.

personally don’t like using Clorox even though it’s so popular. I’m really sensitive to strong smells, and honestly, it just about kills me every time I try to use it. That’s why I started making my own cute little homemade toilet cleaner gel. It feels so much better knowing exactly what’s in it, and I love that it keeps my bathroom fresh without those overpowering chemical fumes. Plus, making it myself feels oddly satisfying like I’ve swapped out a harsh product for something gentler, safer, and way more “me.”
Homemade Toilet Cleaner Recipe:
This recipe can’t get any easier. A few simple ingredients, a quick stir, and you’ve got a natural toilet cleaner ready to go.
Ingredients
- 15 drops essential oil (optional, but amazing for scent)
- 1 cup hot water
- 1/4 cup borax
- 1/4 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup castile soap

Instructions
1. Prep the Soap & Oils
If you’re adding essential oils, mix them right into the castile soap. Citrus oils (like orange, lemon, or grapefruit) make the bathroom smell fresh and clean.

2. Dissolve the Powders
In a bowl, combine the hot water with the borax and baking soda. Stir well until both are fully dissolved.

3. Combine Everything
Slowly add in the castile soap (with or without the essential oils) and gently stir.

4. Bottle It Up
Pour your mixture into a squirt bottle for easy use. A recycled dish soap or ketchup bottle works perfectly for this gel-like consistency.

How to Use Homemade Toilet Cleaner
Shake the bottle before each use to make sure everything is well combined. Squirt a generous amount (about 1/4 cup) into the toilet bowl, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub as usual. That’s it easy and effective!

Notes & Tips
- Since this recipe uses water, it won’t last forever unless you add a preservative. If you’re making small batches, you’ll probably use it up before that becomes an issue.
- Any essential oil works here lavender for calm, peppermint for a refreshing scent, or eucalyptus for a spa-like vibe.
- If you love a stronger gel consistency, you can experiment by adding a bit of xanthan gum or arrowroot powder.
