Why Tallow?
If you haven’t jumped into the tallow trend yet, let me introduce you to tallow and its amazing skin benefit
Tallow is now a trend, but it’s been around for centuries and for good reason! This natural fat, especially when sourced from grass-fed animals, is packed with skin-loving nutrients that make it an amazing addition to your skincare routine.
I like to find reliable sources of information, and I found this paper to be one of the best ones available online. You can visit the source here: Tallow, Rendered Animal Fat, and Its Biocompatibility With Skin: A Scoping Review
Here’s why tallow is so beneficial for your skin:
- Rich in Vitamins: Tallow is loaded with vitamins A, D, E, K and B12, all of which are essential for healthy skin. Vitamin A helps to repair skin damage and promote skin cell regeneration, while Vitamin D supports the skin’s natural barrier. Vitamin E acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting your skin from environmental stressors, and Vitamin K promotes skin elasticity.
- Deeply Moisturizing: The fatty acids in tallow are similar to the ones naturally found in your skin, which helps it absorb quickly and deeply moisturize.
- Natural and Non-toxic: Unlike many store-bought lotions that contain chemicals, preservatives, or artificial fragrances, tallow is a pure, natural ingredient that’s gentle on the skin.
- Supports Skin Healing: Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, tallow can help soothe irritated skin and even reduce redness and inflammation.
I personally buy my tallow from Lady May Tallow on Etsy. I’m not sponsored; I just really like their products. I love that it’s odorless and soft, but you can also find it on Amazon for more convenience.
Homemade Tallow Lotion Bars Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup grass-fed tallow
- 1/2 cup avocado oil
- 1/2 cup beeswax
- 1 tsp vitamin E oil
- 20-30 drops of essential oils (optional)
- Silicone Mold

Instructions:
1. Melt the Tallow and Beeswax:
Start by melting the tallow and beeswax together in a double boiler. If you don’t have one, you can use a glass bowl over a pot of simmering water. Stir occasionally until everything is fully melted and combined.
Want to save this for later?

2. Mix in the Oils:
Once your tallow and beeswax mixture is melted, remove it from the heat. Then, mix in the avocado oil and vitamin E oil. Stir well so the oils are evenly distributed.

3. Add the Essential Oils
If you’re using essential oils, add 20-30 drops to the melted mixture.

4. Pour into Molds:
Now, carefully pour your melted mixture into silicone molds. You can use molds in any shape or size you like, there are so many options. You could even use an ice cube tray!
I made a bit of a mess while pouring the mixture into the molds, so don’t be like me, haha! Also, my mixture started to harden, so I had to reheat it. Keep in mind that it hardens quickly

5. Let the Bars Harden:
Place your filled molds in the refrigerator or freezer. In about an hour, your lotion bars should be solid and ready to use.

6. Pop Them Out and Store:
After an hour, carefully remove the lotion bars from the molds. Store them in a cool, dry place, and they’ll be good to go! Just a heads-up, these bars will melt if left near the sun, so keep them in a cool spot.

I like to keep these in a jar in my fridge because it makes them cool, and they feel really refreshing when applied to the skin.
Notes
- Any carrier oil will work. While avocado oil is great for its moisturizing properties, you can substitute it with other carrier oils like coconut oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil if you prefer.
- Be sure to use high-quality, skin-safe essential oils, especially if you have sensitive skin. Always do a patch test to ensure no irritation.
- These lotion bars will melt in hot temperatures, so keep them in a cool, dry place. A bathroom drawer or shelf works well, but avoid leaving them in direct sunlight or hot areas.
These tallow lotion bars are a great way to care for your skin with natural, nourishing ingredients. And the best part is, you can make them exactly how you like and your skin will thank you!
