I’ve been loving this Tallow magnesium lotion recipe, it’s nourishing and soothing with the added bonus of magnesium, which is perfect for relaxing muscles and promoting better sleep.
I like to use this tallow magnesium lotion before going to bed. I started using it mostly because I’d heard about the wonderful bedtime powers of magnesium (and because I’ll try just about anything that might help me sleep better), but I stayed for the tallow. That rich, creamy texture is straight-up dreamy, and it leaves my skin super soft.
P.S. Mother’s Day is coming up, and if you’re looking for a thoughtful, homemade gift that’s actually useful (and smells amazing), this tallow magnesium lotion is the perfect gift.

Why Tallow and Magnesium?
Tallow is rich in fatty acids and vitamins, making it an amazing moisturizer that’s perfect for dry or sensitive skin. Magnesium, is known for its muscle-relaxing properties and ability to soothe sore muscles, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality. By combining these two ingredients, you’re creating a lotion that not only hydrates but also helps your body relax and unwind.
Where to Get Quality Tallow?
The easiest option? Amazon, quick, convenient, and gets the job done. But if you’re like me and go through tallow super fast, Etsy is a great place to buy in bulk from small shops like Lady May Tallow (that’s where I personally get mine!). And if you’re feeling extra DIY-ish, you can render it yourself at home.

Tallow Magnesium Lotion Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup tallow
- 1/2 tbsp almond oil
- 1 tbsp beeswax
- 1/2 cup magnesium flakes
- 1//2 cup water
- 25 drops essential oils (optional)
Since this recipe includes water, I highly recommend adding a natural preservative to prevent mold and bacteria, something like Leucidal Complete, or Germall Plus, are a great choice.

Instructions:
1. Start with the Magnesium:
Boil some water. Once boiled, add ½ cup to the magnesium flakes and stir until the flakes are melted.

2. Melt the Tallow and Beeswax:
Then, melt the tallow and beeswax in a double broiler until fully melted.

Want to save this for later?
3. Add the Almond Oil:
Once the tallow and beeswax are fully melted, stir in the almond oil. Almond oil is light and nourishing, and it adds a beautiful smoothness to the lotion.

4. Cool Down Both Mixtures:
Let both the magnesium oil and the tallow mixture cool down. You want them to be roughly the same temperature before combining. This will ensure a smooth, creamy consistency.

5. Blend Them Together:
Slowly pour the magnesium into the tallow mixture while using an immersion blender. This will help them emulsify and combine into a lovely lotion. Blend until everything is fully mixed together.
I recommend using Olivem 1000, or BTMS-50. They’re easy to work with and widely used in natural skincare recipes. Just melt it with your oils before combining with the magesium mixture.

6. Add Essential Oils:
Once all combined, add in the essential oil if using and mix one more time.

7. Pour the finished lotion into a glass jar
Pour the finished lotion into a clean glass jar or container while it’s still warm (but not hot). Let it cool completely before sealing with a lid. Store in a cool, dry place.
To use: Massage a small amount into your skin before bed, focusing on legs, arms, and anywhere you tend to feel tense. A little goes a long way!

Notes
- You can use herb infused oils
