If you’re looking for a simple and natural way to stay hydrated without all the artificial ingredients found in store-bought sports drinks, this homemade electrolyte powder is perfect for you! It’s quick to make, and easy to customize.
I have always been a fan of Gatorade and Sport Drinks, especially for those days I used to go to the gym every day or when the weather is extremely hot or we are sick.
Unfortunately, most electrolyte powders contain a lot of sugar, so I have been making my own lately, and I’m pretty happy with it. What I like the most about this recipe is that I can play with it. For example, sometimes I like to add 1/2 cup freeze-dried strawberries, which gives it a delicious taste. If you are looking to reduce sugar or perhaps try making your own recipes, then you will love this electrolyte powder.
Why Make Your Own Electrolyte Powder?
Most commercial sports drinks and powders are packed with artificial flavors, colors, and excessive sugar. Making your own electrolyte powder means you control the ingredients, avoid unnecessary additives, and still get all the benefits of proper hydration and electrolyte balance.
Homemade Electrolyte Powder Recipe
This recipe makes about 14 ounces of powder, which will last you a while!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup maple sugar
- 1/4 cup sea salt
- 1/4 cup potassium chloride
- 2 tablespoons magnesium citrate powder
- 1/4 cup citric acid

Instructions:
1. Measure and Mix:
Measure out and combine all your ingredients in a large bowl. Be sure to wear a mask or cover your face while mixing, as the fine powders can create a cloud that might be irritating to breathe in.

2. Sift for Smoothness:
If you notice any clumps, sift the mixture to ensure a smooth, even powder.

3. Store Properly:
Store in an airtight jar in a cool, dry place.

How to Use:
Add 1 teaspoon of the electrolyte powder into 8 ounces of water and stir until fully dissolved.

Customization Tips:
- Swap maple sugar for coconut sugar, regular sugar, or a sugar substitute based on your preference.
- Adjust the amount of sugar to make it more or less sweet.
- I used a flavored magnesium powder, but plain works just as well!
This homemade electrolyte powder is an easy and effective way to stay hydrated while avoiding unnecessary additives. It’s great for post-workout recovery, hot summer days, or whenever you need an electrolyte boost. Give it a try, and let me know how you like it!
