I feel like whipped tallow balm is all over Pinterest right now. Everyone’s into beef tallow body butters lately, and I didn’t want to feel behind, so I figured I’d try it out and see what the hype is about. Also, because my tallow sunscreen is one of the most popular recipes on the blog, so I figured it was time to make a body butter too.

One of my concerns with using tallow at first was that I’d end up smelling like beef. But honestly, the tallow I use doesn’t even smell like anything at all. I think the only ones who can actually pick up on it are my dogs… and they try to lick it off every time lol. I’ve asked my husband and friends, and nope, no weird smell.

I’ve also learned that with tallow, a little goes a long way. It’s richer and more emollient than regular lotion, so you really don’t need much.

I already have a few tallow recipes on the blog (I love it), so this isn’t my first time working with it. But this time, I wanted to keep things super simple. No fancy ingredients, no complicated steps, just a rich, whipped tallow balm made from pure beef tallow and a little bit of carrier oil. That’s it.

If you’re just getting started with tallow, this is the perfect tallow balm beginner recipe.

Whipped Tallow Balm Recipe:

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp carrier oil (I used jojoba oil, but honestly, any liquid oil you like works)
  • 1/2 cup tallow
  • 30 drops essential oil (optional)
  • Glass jar

Instructions:

1. Melt the Tallow

Add the tallow to a heat-safe bow and gently melt it using a double boiler. You can also use the microwave in short bursts, just be sure not to overheat it.

2. Add the Carrier Oil

Once the tallow is fully melted, stir in your carrier oil (2 tablespoons). Mix thoroughly to make sure it blends well with the tallow.

3. Add Essential Oils (Optional)

If you’re using essential oils, add them and give it another quick whip to fully incorporate them.

4. Cool the Mixture

Let the mixture cool a little. You can leave it at room temperature or put it in the fridge to speed things up. It should be solid but still soft enough to whip.

5. Whip Until Fluffy

Once the balm has hardened, use a hand mixer or stand mixer to whip it until it’s light, fluffy, and creamy, this usually takes a few minutes.

6. Transfer to Container

Spoon the tallow whipped balm into a clean, dry jar or container with a lid. Store it in a cool, dry place.

Notes:

Essential Oil Suggestions (Optional)

If you’d like a subtle scent or added skin benefits, you can use gentle essential oils. For a 1% dilution, stick to about 30 drops total per 6 oz balm. Some of my favorites are:

  • Lavender: Calming and soothing
  • Frankincense: Great for aging or irritated skin
  • Chamomile: Gentle and calming
  • Tea Tree: Helps with acne-prone or itchy skin
  • Ylang Ylang or Geranium: Floral and balancing
