Homemade oat milk is my favorite out of all alternative dairy milks, and I never thought it would be so easy to make until I started learning and trying different recipes at home with just a few ingredients, variations, and my blender.

I’m a Chobani oat milk extra creamy fan, but I also love making things from scratch and learning how to make things taste similar to store-bought products with ingredients that are more natural and better for you, with less or no sugar.

This is the base homemade oat milk recipe, which means it is the easiest and simplest oat milk recipe there is. I’ll post some additional substitutions on the blog, but first, I have to teach you how to make the base, a pure oat milk recipe that tastes good, and this is it. Once you know how to make this one, you can start adding variations and trying different ingredients and ratios to adjust more to your liking.

Homemade Oat Milk

I get most of my jars from the Dollar Tree, Target, and Amazon.

Instructions:

1. Blend the Ingredients

In a blender, combine the oats, cold water, honey, vanilla extract, and salt.

Blend for 20 seconds, avoid over-blending, as it can make the milk gummy.

2. Strain for Smoothness

Pour the blended mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a large bowl or milk jar. Avoid pressing the oat pulp too much; this helps keep the texture light and creamy.

I used a stainless steel strainer because I lost my mesh one, and it worked perfectly.

For a smoother texture, strain the oat milk a second time (I did) to remove any remaining oats and ensure it’s nice and milky.

3. Taste and Adjust

Give your oat milk a quick taste. If you prefer it a little sweeter, feel free to add more honey, vanilla syrup or vanilla extract.

4. Store and Refrigerate

Transfer your oat milk to a jar and refrigerate. Letting it chill overnight enhances the flavor, but if you’re impatient (like me), you can drink it right away, just serve it over ice.

Notes:

  • I like my oat milk on the sweeter side, so sometimes I add a little vanilla syrup—totally optional but delicious!
  • If you want a creamier texture, try reducing the amount of water.
  • Separation is natural, just shake well before each use.

Enjoy your fresh, homemade oat milk! Let me know if you try it and what variations you come up with.
